Almost everybody sends boxes before they move. It is an established, sensible and well-served way of getting belongings across, and it stops working at exactly the point everything else on this site does — the furniture.
Boxes are the carloads of an international move. They work beautifully until only the wardrobe is left.
Who moves this way

- Retirement and long-stay moves to the provinces, most of them self-funded.
How the goods travel
By sea in a container, either shared or sole use, or by air for a small urgent consignment. Where boxes have already gone ahead, what remains is usually furniture and appliances, which changes the shape of the quotation considerably.
From the port of arrival, Manila and the surrounding provinces are served directly. Cebu, Davao and the other islands add a domestic sea leg, planned as part of the movement rather than added at the end.

The Philippines operates well-established arrangements for returning residents and for people taking up residence, claimed against a detailed inventory with residence and status documentation. The position differs considerably depending on which category you fall into, and it is worth establishing that before anything else.

When boxes stop being enough
Sending boxes ahead is a genuine institution on this corridor and there is nothing to improve about it for what it does. Clothing, small goods, gifts and household items travel that way perfectly well and people have been doing it for decades.
What it will never move is the furniture, the appliances and anything that needs two people and a staircase. So the conversation we usually have is the international version of the carloads conversation: half of it has gone, and what is left is the part a firm was always needed for.
That changes the quotation in a useful way. A consignment of furniture and appliances with very little soft packing is a different shape from a whole household, and on a shared container it frequently occupies less than people assume.
Then the far end. Metro Manila condominiums run on management offices, booked service lifts and defined move-in windows, exactly as they do across the region. Provincial addresses are the opposite problem: the main road is fine and the last stretch is a barangay road that takes a smaller vehicle.

For the furniture and appliances, almost certainly. Boxes move everything light and nothing heavy, which is the same split as a domestic carloads move.

Does that make the shipment smaller?
Usually, and in a useful way. Furniture and appliances with little soft packing is a different shape from a whole household and often takes less container space than expected.

We quote both. Shared is cheaper and handled several more times; sole use is sealed at your door. On a furniture-only consignment shared is frequently the sensible choice.
